Ellora Ajanta is a dance and music festival held in January in the beautiful Soneri Mahal in Aurangabad. Dating back to the 17th century, this architectural wonder was built by Pahadsing, an Orchha chief.

The festival previously known as the Ellora Festival took place in the splendid setting of the world heritage listed rock temple of Ellora, about 30 km from Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Ellora includes around 34 caves carved into the sloping slope of the Chamadri hills. Excavated between 600 and 1000 AD, the caves belong to the Buddhist, Jain and Hindu religions. Ellora represents some 300 years of experiences carried out by different faiths with their very different iconography and structural compulsions. Another 28 caves were later discovered by the Archeological Survey of India. Ellora’s masterpiece is the Kailash Temple. It is the largest monolithic sculpture in the world, carved from a rock by 7,000 workers over a period of 150 years.

This festival, organized at the Soneri Mahal since 2002, presents a mixture of classical and folk dances, instrumental, vocal, milajula mushira, etc. of the best talents in Indian music and dance. The Festival aims to highlight the historical and pictorial sites of Aurangabad and its surroundings. It is a unique and charming way to experience some of them such as Daulatabad, Bibi-ka-Maqbara, Panchakki (a water mill), Lonar, Shirdi and the beautiful caves of Ellora and Ajanta, s’ steeped in centuries of history and culture. Along with the Ellora Ajanta festival, Kalagram – Haat Handicrafts from Aurangabad will host Lokotsav which showcases the region’s antiques, crafts, folk arts and cuisine.

Ellora Ajanta Aurangabad Festival is organized by Aurangabad Festival Committee under the chairmanship of Division Commissioner Aurangabad in association with Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), where renowned Indian artists showcase their talents in music and dance.
