‘Mars One’ acquired by Magnolia Pictures ahead of Sundance Film Festival – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Gabriel Martins’ film March One was captured by Magnolia Pictures International ahead of the photo’s world premiere at Sundance Film Festival next week in the World Cinema Dramatic section.

March One follows the Martins family, optimistic dreamers who quietly lead their lives on the fringes of a large Brazilian city, following the disappointing election of a far-right president. A lower-middle-class black family, they feel the strain of their new reality as the political dust settles.

“Gabriel Martins has made an uplifting and tender film about the hopes and dreams of a family, facing a Brazil in constant turmoil,” said Lorna Lee Torres, Head of International Sales. “We are more than delighted to defend this beautiful film and invite the audience to share the successes, failures, fears and loves of these characters, all portrayed with delicacy and charm.”

March One Producer Thiago Macêdo Correia added, “At Filmes de Plástico, we are more than happy to have the confidence and expertise of Magnolia Pictures International and their great team behind our film. It was very important for us to collaborate with a company that would be sensitive to the themes of the film and our approach, so we are delighted to have found such amazing partners.

March One was funded by a public fund to support black filmmakers and black narratives that no longer exist under the current Brazilian presidential administration. The film was shot just after Brazil’s 2018 elections, which changed everything in the country, reversing recent advances in civil rights and promoting a new tension of conservatism in society. March One has previously won the $ 10,000 Paradiso WIP award from Ventana Sur.

The film joins Magnolia International’s 2022 lineup, which includes Nana Mensah’s comedy Queen of glory, South African action thriller Compensate, that of Adam Leon Italian studies with Vanessa Kirby and Udo Kier’s SXSW comedy Swan song.

Torres and Magnolia International Sales Director Marie Zeniter will launch March One during Sundance, which runs January 20-30.
