Now in its 16th year, the Red Rock Film Festival has teamed up with the Utah Film Market for a big event in Cedar City. The Festival opens on Monday with the surf music documentary “Sound of the Surf”. It then runs all week all day with over 65 films, even more films with its virtual festival, red carpet world premieres, filmmaker interviews, parties and more seminars than before.

So far, the best ticket sales are for these seminars, with the new documentary “Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West” and the new feature war versus music “It’s Spring…” leading the pack.

Planning to attend its premiere in southern Utah, co-producer Anna Khachatryan said:

“This will be our second visit to Utah. Earlier this year we had a private film screening for the Armenian Diaspora in Salt Lake City. Now we are excited to bring the film to a wider audience.

In the local spectrum, Dan Fowlks presents the black and white version of “Shred of Decency”, which is linked to the Festival’s theme “Explore the Grey”, which social media posts describe as “less obvious stories, the territory uncharted independent film.

The variety of genres is the key to the Festival. A simple click on “war” in the website’s movies and events guide reveals “A Tale of War Ranger,” a documentary that chronicles Sergeant David Waterhouse’s service in Iraq and Afghanistan on a journey of innocence lost. A click on ‘France’ reveals five French films: an animated comedy, a dark comedy, a bizarre comedy, a wrestling drama and a feature documentary about the spirit of Irish traditional music.

If horses and birds are your thing, clicking “Animals” displays Best Friends Animal Society’s push for animals in films from animated shorts, family adventure “The Island of Lost Girls,” documentary about falconry “Overland” and “Wild Beauty” directed by Ashley Avis, who started the project while filming scenes for the Disney+ movie “Black Beauty” in Utah, one of several filmmakers in attendance.

The additional virtual portal is limited to the film industry this year, and some additional videos to the public, such as “Soul Summit”, an earlier film by Tayo Giwa, who this year directed the Mountain West theatrical premiere of “The Sun Rises in the East”. “one of several pan-African cultural films on the subject at the Festival, just click on the film posters on the website for more details at redrockfilmfestival.eventive.org/films.
